I’m not sure what’s in the water, but I have more newborn sessions on my calendar this year than ever before! In-home newborn sessions are some of my favorite sessions to photograph. There’s just something special about capturing a family bringing their bundle of joy home for the first time. But let’s be honest – while adjusting to life with a newborn is SUCH a special time, it can also be exhausting and the last thing you want is to have to stress about your upcoming session. To make your life easier, I wanted to answer some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to newborn sessions. Sit back, relax, and read on!
When should I reach out to schedule my session?
As soon as you decide you’d like to have me capture your newborn! It’s never too early to get on the calendar. Once you reach out to me to schedule a session, I will send over a contract and have your due date on my calendar. Once the baby arrives, you will email me and we’ll get something on the schedule. I usually try to schedule something within the first 1-2 weeks of the baby arriving; or more importantly, once you’re home and feeling settled.
How long will it take?
Typically, newborn sessions last between 1-2 hours. It all depends on the baby and how many times we may need to stop to feed, or calm him/her. But no worries - I will stay there as long as I need to ensure I capture everything I came for!
What should I wear?
I tend to think that neutrals photograph beautifully for newborn sessions. They are timeless, soft, and don’t distract from the main attraction! A mix of neutrals, paired with some patterned swaddles or subtle colors tend to look really nice. Flowy tops, long dresses, soft sweaters, or something with texture are all great options. For the baby, I usually ask for you to set aside a few neutral onesies/outfits, and a handful of swaddles to choose from. No need to stress, I will usually have a few swaddles on hand in case you need some extra options! In case you missed it, I also wrote a blog post which shared some helpful tips when it comes to planning your outfits for a session!
How can I prepare?
First off - Relax! I want this process to be as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Don’t feel like your house needs to be spotless, or everything needs to look perfect. I do suggest removing anything from your house that you may not want to appear in photos. Additionally, if you have a neutral or solid quilt/comforter, it’s helpful to have that on hand incase I need to throw it on the bed for photos. If possible, try to feed the little one right before I get there!
Where will we be shooting?
I usually spend most of the session shooting in the three main living areas: The nursery, living room, and master bedroom. With that said, a lot of this will be based on the lighting within your home! Once I arrive to the session, I will do a walk-through and decide which rooms have the best light and will be the best for shooting in. I may move certain things out of the way, or slightly adjust some furniture to capture the best light.
What if my baby is fussy?
This is completely normal, and nothing to stress about! I’ve rarely had a session where the baby isn’t fussy for at least a portion of it. We will break as many times as needed if the baby needs to be fed, rocked, or changed. I will usually use this time to take detail shots of the nursery, or spend some time capturing other family members (siblings, etc), so it isn’t wasted time!
Will you be bringing props?
I try to capture you and your family in your natural environment, without traditional posing and props. While I will absolutely capture images of just your little one, I won’t be posing them or providing specific props.
There you have it! I hope this was a helpful tool when it comes to preparing for your newborn session. Expecting, but not on my calendar yet?! What are you waiting for? I’d love to chat with you!
